The chapter meets for lunch once each month, September through May, on the third Wednesday of each month at noon in Carson City. The one-hour meetings include both chapter business and an educational program. Though the educational programs take a summer hiatus, we still meet for lunch each third Wednesday during the months of June, July, and August. For meeting location, please contact the Chapter Regent.
Our fourth annual holiday wreath laying ceremony is scheduled for Monday morning, December 6, 2010 on the front steps of the Nevada Capitol in Carson City.
As a 'young' chapter, organized in 2004, chapter members are already making strides to promote DAR programs and ideals in our community.
The chapter held its second annual holiday wreath laying ceremony on December 8, 2008. The wreath was laid by Governor Gibbons and the first grade class from St. Teresa School. Special guests included State Controller Kim Wallin, Executive Director Tim Tetz of the Nevada Office of Veterans Affairs, Nevada DAR State Regent Anita Sheard, and Carson City Mayor-elect Robert Crowell. Noah Jennings, Vice President of Cui-ui Society C.A.R., participated in the wreath laying and made the closing remarks.
The first grade class from St. Teresa School won the honor to lay the 2008 wreath by participating in a school-wide community service project, where each class was inducted as a Junior American Citizens Club on Constitution Day 2008 and chapter members made a presentation on the Constitutional Convention and handed out patriotic literature and items. Nine JAC clubs with 178 members were created. Each JAC club was then required to complete a community service project which demonstrated good citizenship. Though the first graders were awarded the most outstanding service project in the school, each class was awarded the first place community service project for their grade level in the local JAC contest. Additionally, Noah Jennings received first place for his photo essay titled Mormon Station: Birth of a New State.
As part of the 2008 JAC project, all fifth through eighth graders in the school are participating in the American History Essay Contest, the theme of which centers around the Gettysburg Address. In October, 2008, KOLO television reporter John Tyson addressed an assembly of fourth through eighth graders at St. Teresa School and recited the Gettysburg Address, then answered questions regarding the Address, Abraham Lincoln, and the Civil War.
On Armed Forces Day, May 17, 2008, the Chapter sponsored a booth at the fair at Mills Park. We enrolled children as Junior American Citizens and let them visit our duck ponds - Yorktown, Valley Forge, and Lexington & Concord - to win a patriotic-themed prize. 80 children became Junior American Citizens and more than 160 pieces of patriotic literature were handed out.
The chapte's December 10, 2007 holiday wreath laying ceremony honoring veterans was also part of the Wreaths Across America project. The wreath was laid on the front steps of the Nevada Capitol by Governor Jim Gibbons and First Lady Dawn Gibbons, assisted by the fourth grade class from St. Teresa School. A Cui-ui Society C.A.R. member participated in the wreath laying, and the fourth graders were inducted as members of a Junior American Citizens Club. Chapter members also presented an American flag to Western Nevada College on Patriot Day, September 11, 2007, to fly at the college's new baseball stadium.
Due to the wonderful publicity generated by both the 2007 Wreaths Across America project and the 2007Patriot Day flag donation, the Battle Born Chapter was awarded the Nevada State Society travelling Publicity trophy for outstanding publicity efforts at the 2008 state conference. Battle Born Chapter also received two 2008 Southwest Division awards for these efforts: Outstanding Chapter/Community Event and Outstanding Print and/or Broadcast Publicity.
Members are very involved in literacy efforts in Carson City. Our many volunteer literacy hours resulting in a First Place win in the Literacy Challenge contest at the Nevada State Society DAR state conference in March, 2006. We also have participants in volunteer information specialists and national web site review. Our first two Community Service Awards were presented in December, 2005.
Chapter members are reaching out to promote the American History Essay Contest in private schools and with home-schooled children in our community. Our chapter sponsored the 2005 state winners of the American History Essay Contest in the sixth and eighth grades, and the 2008 state winner at the eighth grade level. The chapter is home for two state officers including the State Regent, several state chairmen, one national vice chairman, and two members of the NSDAR Speakers Staff.
