Washington Bicentennial Tree
|
Location: |
University of Nevada, Reno Campus Reno |
Dedicated: |
April 1932 |
Marker Significance: |
The Norway Spruce was planted on the University of Nevada campus by the Nevada
Sagebrush Chapter between Lincoln Hall and then Artemisia Hall
overlooking Manzanita Lake. The marker was placed as part of the George
Washington Bicentennial program, and the marker was made by local boy
scouts. |
Directions: |
The tree is south of
Lincoln Hall and the plaque is a substantial brass marker on a concrete
base. The tree itself is between 75 and 100 feet tall. What is south
of the tree (and north of Manzanita Lake) is now the Jot-Travis Student
Union, so it appears that Artemesia Hall was torn down to make room for
the student union. By the fall of 2008 there will be a new student
union, so campus buildings are only temporary sites.
To find the plaque, park
in the Jot-Travis Student Union parking lot just off Virginia Street.
Walk north. White Pine Hall faces Virginia Street by the overhead
crosswalk. Immediately East of White Pine Hall and North of Jot-Travis
is Lincoln Hall. As you see Lincoln Hall on your left, just across the
drive on your right, you see the huge Washington Centennial Tree with
the plaque on the ground in front of it. (The plaque is on the ground,
northwest of the base of the tree.) |
